Alfonso "Poncho" Nevárez earned his bachelor´s degree in Government from The University of Texas at Austin and received his law degree from St. Mary´s University School of Law. He has a successful law practice, specializing in personal injury litigation, in his hometown of Eagle Pass. From 2005-2009, he served as a Trustee on the Eagle Pass ISD Board as well as served on the Maverick County Tax Appraisal District.
On January 8, 2013, Rep. Nevárez was sworn in as State Representative for House District 74. He was appointed to the International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, Culture, Recreation & Tourism Committee, and the Rules & Resolutions Committee. Rep. Nevárez passed several important pieces of legislation, including House Bill 908 which helps protect and ensure the safety of the elderly and disabled and also joint-authored House Bill 1597 which avails the opportunity for veterans to make installment payments on their property taxes. Furthermore, Rep. Nevárez contributed to key language in Senate Bill 215 by returning power to institutions of higher education when it comes to the decision of consolidating or eliminating a certificate or degree program at the institution.
Rep. Nevárez is passionate about supporting and funding public education, border infrastructure, and fighting to represent the rights of the underserved. He was humbled to be named Freshman of the Year by his colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus.
Rep. Nevárez and his wife, Rossy Guadarrama de Nevárez, are the proud parents of three children, Renata, Rominna, and Alfonso Hernan (Ponchito).
