+ − Biography
Marisa Mrquez was born to El Paso natives Dr. Ricardo Mrquez and Gloria Flores in Houston, Texas. Shortly after, her family returned to El Paso, where she attended local schools and graduated from Faith Christian Academy as Valedictorian in 1996. She completed her Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Business Economics in 2000 from University of Notre Dame. She currently is the Vice President of Operations for JAR Insurance.
Marisa remains committed to the El Paso community and has fought hard to increase transparency in local government and passed several statutes having statewide impact. In 2009, Mrquez passed legislation that created the first county ethics commission in the State of Texas, and worked hard to improve building standards in unincorporated areas; a huge victory for the safety and health of all Texas families. This past session, Marisa was the only El Paso lawmaker to be appointed to the powerful Appropriations Committee where she was able to lend a strong voice for the El Paso region.
Representative Mrquez has received several awards including Best Freshman Award by the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition, Freshman Excellence Award from the Legislative Study Group, Outstanding Legislator Award by the Texas State Employees Union, Distinguished Service Award by the Juvenile Justice Association of Texas, Friend of County Government by the Texas Association of Counties, and the Best Legislator Award in the 82nd Session by the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters. She is member of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, as well as the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.
Representative Mrquez was sworn into her third term in the Texas House on January 8, 2013. She represents District 77, containing downtown El Paso, UTEP, neighborhoods near Fort Bliss in the Northeast, and across the Franklins to neighborhoods around Coronado High. During the 83rd Legislature, Representative Mrquez serves as Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Environmental Regulation and is a member of the Appropriations Committee, and also the House Committee on House Administration.
