Jim Murphy serves in the Texas House, representing District 133 in West Houston. Jim is in his third term and will enter his fourth term in January 2015.
Representative Murphy serves on the Committees Small Business and Economic Development and Higher Education and is the Chairman of the subcommittee on Manufacturing.
Jim’s legislative work has been recognized by the National Coalition for Capital, Texas Right to Life, and the Texas Association of Business. Empower Texas named Murphy one of its 2011 Taxpayer Advocates for his outstanding work on fiscal matters and the Texas Conservative Coalition named him a "Courageous Conservative" for his legislative leadership.
The Houston Executive Council named Jim Murphy its Elected Official of the Year for 2007 as a result of his work during the 80th Legislative Session. He was also recognized by Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas for his work on Criminal Justice issues. Murphy represents Texas on the US Energy Council, and the NCSL Committee on State and Local Revenue. He serves on the Board of the Texas Conservative Coalition (TCC) and is the Co-Chair for the TCC's task force on Budget and Revenue.
In the recently completed 83rd session, Representative Murphy worked to pass key legislation that expands our workforce and job opportunities for Texas students and provided for critical tax incentives for research and development. Additional bills he authored and passed allowed for cost effective construction of hike and bike trails in Harris County and made for significant reforms to continue our most successful economic development progress.
Prior to his service in the Legislature, Jim was twice elected to the HCC Board of Trustees and served from 1997 to 2006. Jim is President of District Management Services, a consulting firm assisting economic development organizations. For the past 20 years, Murphy has served as one of the driving forces of Westchase District - the 4.2 square mile business district in west Houston.
Jim has served on numerous boards in our community including the Houston West Chamber of Commerce, West Houston Medical Center, and the Houston Association of Commercial Real Estate Professionals. Jim is an active member of the Greater Houston Partnership, the Houston Association of Realtors, and the Urban Land Institute.
Murphy’s community service includes work with the Jaycees -- where he served as local President and as State President. He was named one of the Five Outstanding Young Texans in 1995. Jim has coached youth sports and served on the pastoral council of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church. He was also a founder and Vice Chair of the Alief Education Foundation and was appointed to the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute’s Advisory Council by the UT Regents.
Murphy grew up in west Houston and graduated from Strake Jesuit and UT Austin. He and his wife, Dr. Kathleen Murphy, have two sons in college, Robert and Pace. They are active members of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
