George Lavender was elected to the Texas House of Representatives by the people of House District 1 in November 2010. He was re-elected in 2012 by a margin of 85% in the newly configured House District 1 which now includes Bowie, Red River, Lamar, & Franklin Counties.
Rep. Lavender just completed his second session in Austin where he serves on the House Transportation Committee and the Homeland Security & Public Safety Committee. George also serves on the Energy Council, House Research Organization, Interim Manufacturing Committee and is a member of numerous caucuses including the Texas Military and Community Affairs Caucus.
The narrative of the 83rd Legislative Session was dominated by water and education. Rep. Lavender worked along-side his colleagues to pass several pieces of Major State Legislation including HB 4, HB 1025 & SJR 1, the three legislation components to the water funding plan that will be on the ballot this November. HB 5 also passed this session and is a comprehensive education reform bill that reduced the number of standardized tests for high school students from 15 to 5 and provides greater flexibility in graduation requirements. Other major bills include TRS & ERS reforms, pro-life legislation and a transportation funding plan that will be on the ballot in 2014.

In addition to his legislative accomplishments, Rep. Lavender has been a proactive advocate for Red River Army Depot, and the interests of East Texas in the ongoing debate over water.
Rep. Lavender is a member and inactive deacon of the First Baptist Church-Moore´s Lane and an involved member of the community. George is a former board member of the Boys & Girls Club, a 20-year volunteer youth coach, and a longtime supporter of the First Choice Pregnancy Center and Watersprings Ranch.
He and his wife, Jan Timberlake, have been married for 34 years and have three children, Allison, Rachel, and Jacob and two sons-in-law, Nic Scherer and Phillip Presley and a daughter-in-law, Ayvee Lavender. George and Jan are now the proud grandparents of two grandchildren, Thomas Edward and Ella Grace.
