Rep. Julie Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter) was first elected to the House of Representatives in November 2016. She is a member of the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
Due to legislation she previously sponsored, thousands of Rhode Islanders in 2018 saw their unclaimed money and property returned to them automatically through the Treasurer’s office.
A bill she sponsored resulted in the creation of a 15-member legislative commission, which she is chairing, to study all aspects involved in changing the start time of Rhode Island’s public high schools.
Representative Casimiro was presented an Afterschool Champion Award by the Rhode Island Afterschool Network, an initiative of the United Way, in 2018. The group honored her as an advocate for keeping children safe, providing them with increased access to high quality learning opportunities, and helping working families.
She also introduced a bill in 2018 that would require utility and cable companies to offer consumers credits for periods of prolonged outages.
During her first year as a legislator in 2017, Representative Casimiro sponsored a successful bill that expanded the eligibility for a special license plate for Gold Star Families. She also sponsored a bill that became law that directs the Department of Health to obtain an annual estimate of the number of children born to Rhode Island families who face significant risk factors known to impair child development.
Representative Casimiro, a former marketing executive and fund development professional, now serves as the executive director of the Kent County YMCA. She graduated from Cranston West High School and received her bachelor’s degree in marketing from Providence College in 1984. Representative Casimiro is the second vice chairwoman of the North Kingstown Democratic Town Committee and is a mentor for the Year Up Providence program.
Representative Casimiro, who was born on June 21, 1962, is married to Richard Casimiro and they reside in North Kingstown.
