Cale P. Keable (D) represents District 47 in Burrillville and Glocester. First elected in November 2010, Representative Keable is the chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary.
As chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, several significant reform measures have been enacted with his leadership. These include measures to restore the Ethics Commission’s oversight of the General Assembly, approved by the voters in 2016; strengthening the campaign finance system, reforming the state’s lobbying laws, modernizing voting equipment, establishing on-line voter registration and automatic voter registration at the Division of Motor Vehicles, and eliminating the master lever.
In 2014, under a bill he sponsored, Rhode Island finally ratified the 17th Amendment, which was passed by Congress in 1912 and took effect without Rhode Island’s approval, providing direct election of U.S. Senators, who were previously selected by state legislators in a process that was often corrupt. In 2012, he cosponsored a bipartisan bill enacted into law that requires a cost-benefit analysis and a periodic review of all regulations impacting small businesses. Also in 2012, he sponsored a successful bill forcing propane sellers to disclose their fees and be clearer in their pricing.
A two-time kidney transplant recipient, he is a former board member of the New England Organ Bank. He is also a former board member of the Industrial Foundation of Burrillville and the Burrillville Schools Alumni Education Foundation Inc. He has been an outspoken opponent of the proposed 1000-megawatt fracked-gas and oil-burning power plant from being built on unspoiled forest land in Burrillville
Representative Keable is an of-counsel litigation attorney at the law firm of Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP in Providence and is a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association.
