Senator Shannon Jones represents the 7th Senate District, encompassing all of Warren County and portions of Butler and Hamilton Counties. Throughout her time in the legislature, Senator Jones has earned key leadership posts and a seat at the table on issues of health and safety for Ohio's families and children.
Prior to becoming a member of the State Senate, she was twice elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, serving from 2007 to 2009 where she was elected by her colleagues to serve as Assistant Majority Whip. During the 129th General Assembly, Senator Jones was elected as Majority Whip of the Senate.
This legislative session, Senator Jones was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Medicaid, Health & Human Services where she worked tirelessly to tour the state and learn ways to combat Ohio's infant mortality problem. She also serves as Vice-Chair of the Finance Subcommittee on Medicaid, and is a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Public Utilities, Commerce & Labor, and Insurance & Financial Institutions committees. Known for her dedication to policy, Senator Jones will continue to delve into complex issues that support families and keep children healthy and safe.
Senator Jones' time in the General Assembly has been marked by numerous legislative accomplishments. Her commitment to child safety resulted in a common-sense law requiring booster seats for children, saving kids from preventable, life-threatening injuries. Senator Jones continues to educate parents about the importance of child safety and often conducts car seat demonstrations and bike helmet fittings throughout her district.
Her vast knowledge of healthcare policy is evident in her contributions to Ohio's healthcare industry through initiatives that streamlined and modernized Ohio's Medicaid program while focusing on quality health outcomes. Senator Jones' passion is for the creation of patient-centered initiatives that reduce costs and improve patient care, with an emphasis on Ohio's vulnerable and critically ill children and elderly.
With her keen eye towards complex policy matters, Senator Jones has been made a go-to person on technical utility matters. Having shepherded significant legislation on electric utility restructuring during her tenure in the House, she was asked to take a similar leadership role in the Senate on such matters by serving as Chair of the Energy & Public Utilities Committee in the 129th General Assembly. In that capacity she sponsored landmark legislation to update Ohio’s oil and natural gas drilling laws for the first time in several decades, paving the way for the safe development of Ohio’s abundant shale resources in eastern Ohio.
Widely recognized as a leader in her field, Senator Jones has been the recipient of many awards for her work in the legislature. In 2009, she received the Antoinette Eaton Advocacy Award from the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for her efforts to improve the health and welfare of Ohio’s children. She has also been awarded a Golden Apple by the Ohio Coalition of eSchool Families and was named Legislator of the Year by the County Boards of Developmental Disabilities. Her contributions to and efforts for Ohio’s bleeding disorders community resulted in Senator Jones receiving the Timothy Prior Award. Senator Jones has also been acknowledged for her dedication to long-term services and supports with the Ohio Council for Home Care & Hospice Home Care & Hospice Hero and Excellence in Caring awards, as well as the Elected Official Advocacy Award from the Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Recently, the National Federation of Independent Business named Jones a Guardian of Small Business.
A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, Senator Jones and her husband of 19 years, Russell, live in Clearcreek Township where they are raising their two children, Jacob (13) and Anna (8). The Jones family attends Saint Mary’s Parish in Franklin and enjoys spending time at local sporting events rooting for the Springboro Panthers.
