+ − Biography
State Rep. Kent Smith was recently elected to serve the people of the 8th Ohio House District after serving Euclid, Ohio as an award winning Member of the Euclid Board of Education from 2002 – 2013. He is a 4-time winner of the “Award of Achievement” which is awarded annually to less than 3% of all School Board Members in Ohio. He was first elected to school board in 2001 and was re-elected in 2005 and 2009. In his 12 years on the Euclid School Board, Kent never missed a meeting.
Smith is finishing his Ph.D. in the Economic Development program at Cleveland State University. His Masters Degree thesis – which was written in 2001 – was about the emerging threat of Predatory Lending and the SubPrime Market. He also co-authored the first Predatory Lending Report by Policy Matters Ohio in 2002.
In the 1990’s Smith worked as paid Democratic Party campaign staff in six states. He used those skills to help build the Euclid Democratic Party into a well-known collection of activists. In 2006, Kent Smith became the local head of the Democratic Party, a position called the Euclid City Democratic Leader. He was unanimously re-elected to that position in 2010.
Representative Smith has worked for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office and for four Northeast Ohio non-profit organizations. He is eager to use his unique perspective and professional experience to improve the quality of life for the people of the 8th Ohio House District.
