Senator Joe Schiavoni represents the 33rd Senate District, which encompasses all of Columbiana and Mahoning Counties. In 2013, Senator Schiavoni’s colleagues unanimously elected him as the Democratic Leader of the Senate, after serving two years as Assistant Leader.
As a legislator, Senator Schiavoni has strived to make job creation and economic development a top priority for all of the communities across the 33rd District. He has been a strong advocate of increased funding for K-12 education, including additional dollars for school safety purposes. Schiavoni has passed legislation that aims to strengthen Ohio neighborhoods by addressing and remediating abandoned, vacant properties.
In regards to the current oil and gas boom in Ohio, Senator Schiavoni has called for sensible oversight of the oil and gas industry to ensure the safety of our health and environment. Furthermore, Senator Schiavoni is seen as a leader in the legislature on workers’ rights issues and for the enhancement of quality jobs for Ohio families.
Senator Schiavoni graduated from Boardman High School after attending St. Dominic's Elementary School and Glenwood Middle School. As a young person, Senator Schiavoni worked at Catullo Prime Meats and Fab-Art Inc., formerly a heavy metal fabrication plant.
He attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and received a Bachelor of Science in Communications. He then obtained his Jurist Doctor from Capital University Law School in Columbus. Following law school, Senator Schiavoni was admitted to the Ohio Bar as well as the West Virginia Bar and has since practiced workers compensation law, working to protect injured workers, with his dad at the law firm Schiavoni, Schiavoni, Bush and Muldowney.
In 2008, Senator Schiavoni was appointed to a vacant seat in the Ohio Senate, and was elected to a full, four year term for his Senate seat in 2010.
Back home in the district, Senator Schiavoni likes to remain active in the community. He is a member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Mahoning Valley, the Mahoning County Bar Association, Curbstone Coaches, the local Farm Bureau, Boardman Civic Association, Italian-American Education Foundation, and the Legends of Leather Boxing Organization.
Sen. Schiavoni and his wife Margaret, a nurse-anesthetist, reside in Boardman with their sons Louie and Dominic.
