+ − Biography
State Representative Tom Letson (D-Warren) of the 64th District is a fourth term lawmaker who is proud to serve his neighbors in parts of Trumbull County.
Rep. Letson was born in Columbus and raised in Champion Township, leaving only to pursue his education. A Champion High School graduate, Rep. Letson worked as a journeyman machinist from 1977 until 1982. That’s when he went back to school, finishing his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kent State University and a law degree from the University of Akron.
Rep. Letson has practiced law for 20 years, currently working at Letson and Swader, Co., LPA. He is a past President of the Trumbull County Bar Association, and he has worked as an acting judge in Warren and an assistant city prosecutor in Newton Falls.
His service to the community has extended beyond the courtroom. He has served on the Warren City Board of Health, and he is a former workers’ compensation representative for the United Steelworkers.
At the Statehouse, Rep. Letson is Ranking Member of both the Ohio House Ways and Means Committee and the State Government and Elections Redistricting Subcommittee. He also serves on the Insurance and Judiciary and Ethics Committees.
Representative Letson has sponsored bills on a wide-range of issues. He has championed issues that are important to the Mahoning Valley, such as economic development incentives and elderly care.
He has actively pursued causes to protect our people and our environment. Rep. Letson has introduced legislation concerning courthouse security, witness protection, and motorcycle seizure guidelines, and he was a driving force behind the Renewable Energy Investment Act of 2010, which has placed Ohio as the leading state in the country in wind and solar energy development. He has also pursued the renaming of two road interchanges in honor of a pair of Trumbull County soldiers, killed in action in Iraq.
Rep. Letson lives in Warren. His personal interests include golf, tennis, skiing, snowboarding and skydiving. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol for 10 years, where he has achieved the level of senior patroller and OEC instructor.
