State Senator Jeff Klein is a proven leader with more than two decades of experience in politics, law and public service. He currently serves as the Co-Leader and President Pro Tempore of the New York State Senate.First elected to the New York State Senate in 2004, Senator Klein has built a reputation as an effective and trusted public servant, authoring numerous laws directly impacting the health, welfare and economic prosperity of residents across New York State. During the financial crisis, Senator Klein authored and passed landmark legislation that prevented thousands of unnecessary foreclosures statewide. This past year, Senator Klein was the prime sponsor of the New York SAFE Act, watershed legislation that finally provided New York with the toughest gun laws in the nation. Senator Klein's legislative work has earned him the praise of numerous editorial boards, including the New York Times, which has called him "smart and hard-working" and the Journal News, which has described him as "an active, independent voice" in the Capital.In January of 2013, Klein was overwhelmingly elected Senate President Pro Tempore, the legislative chamber’s top post, and Leader of the Senate’s Independent Democratic Conference, a conference he co-founded in January 2011. Under a new bipartisan power sharing agreement enacted in 2013, Senator Klein shares the title of Senate President Pro Tempore with Senator Dean Skelos of Long Island (R). In that capacity, Senator Klein exercises joint and equal control over the chamber with his Republican counterpart, Senator Skelos. A lifelong resident of the northeast Bronx, educated in Bronx public schools, Klein holds a B.A. from Queens College, an M.P.A. from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and a J.D. from the City University of New York Law School where he was also a member of the law review. Prior to his election to the Senate, Senator Klein served his current district as a member of the New York State Assembly for ten years. He also served as Deputy Majority Leader of the Senate from 2009-2010. Senator Klein, in his role as Senate President Pro Tempore, is an ex officio member of each Senate committee.
