+ − Biography
Tom McKevitt is a lifelong resident of Nassau County and a devoted public servant. Assemblyman McKevitt received a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from Hofstra University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated first in his class. He received his Juris Doctor from Hofstra Law School, where he served as Articles Editor of the Hofstra Law Review.
McKevitt interned for New York State Supreme Court Justice Marvin Segal and the New York State Attorney Generals Office. He has worked in the offices of state Senator Kemp Hannon and U.S. Senator Alfonse DAmato. He served as Deputy Town Attorney for the Town of Hempstead for nearly nine years, where he argued and won cases before New Yorks highest court, the Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He also has practiced privately with law firms in Nassau County.
McKevitt was first elected to the Assembly in a special election in February 2006, and has been re-elected four times.
McKevitt is a member of the American and New York State Bar Associations, a past Chair of the Municipal Law Committee and a member of the Professional Ethics Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association, as well as the past Editor-in-Chief of the Nassau Lawyer, the Associations monthly newspaper. He has been asked to deliver numerous lectures on land use and zoning enforcement throughout the state. McKevitt believes strongly in the value of community service, as evidenced by his membership in the East Meadow Kiwanis Club and the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, as well as his mentorship of students at the Woodland Middle School and coach of the Holy Trinity Diocesan High School Mock Trial Team. He is the recipient of the George Estabrook Award for service as a distinguished alumnus of Hofstra University.
In 2013, Minority Leader Brian Kolb appointed Assemblyman McKevitt as the Assistant Minority Leader Pro Tempore. As the number three ranking position in the Assembly Minority Conference, McKevitt is responsible for assisting in the management of all floor activity and debates.
McKevitt is currently the ranking minority member on the Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection, and also serves on the Codes, Local Governments, and Election Law committees. One of Assemblyman McKevitts main priorities is to make sure Long Island receives its fair share of funding for schools and that those funds go directly to the classroom.
He is a parishioner of St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church in East Meadow, and a member of the Nassau County Catholic Lawyers Guild and the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Massapequa. Assemblyman McKevitt resides in East Meadow with his wife, Samantha, who is a social studies teacher in the public school system, and their two children.
