Steve Hawley was elected to serve the 139th Assembly District on February 28, 2006. His district includes all of Genesee County; the Towns of Clarkson, Hamlin, Sweden and Riga in Monroe County; and all of Orleans County except the Town of Shelby.
A Batavia native, Hawley graduated from Batavia High School and earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toledo, Ohio. He served seven years in the Ohio Army National Guard and the U. S. Army Reserves, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant. A small-business owner, Steve Hawley brings experience in agriculture, insurance and real estate to the Assembly. A former owner and operator of Hawley Farms, he currently owns The Insurance Center, a full service property/casualty insurance agency founded in 1867 and located in Batavia. He also holds a real estate license, selling residential and commercial property in the Western New York area.
Committed to his community, Hawley comes to Albany with a long history of public and charitable service. He has served on the Genesee County Legislature, the Board of Directors of the Genesee Community College Foundation, Genesee County Empire Zone Development Board, Genesee Center for Independent Living, Genesee County Planning Board and Genesee Valley BOCES Board of Education. Hawley also served on the Board of Directors of the Genesee Area YMCA, United Way, as President of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County and President of the Genesee County Farm Bureau. He is a member of the Batavia Rotary Club, American Legion Glenn Loomis Post 332, and a life member of the Stafford Volunteer Fire Department. He also is a member of the St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia.
Mr. Hawley has developed legislation that will keep our children and families safe by preventing registered level two or three sex offenders from working in amusement parks and by requiring that certain sex offenders residences be reported to the Division of Criminal Justice Services, creating an added layer of protection. He also authored legislation that would assist the agricultural industry, including exempting owners of farms and multiple dwellings from the Scaffold Law, establishing the Agricultural Assistance Program and extending the eligibility of the agricultural property tax credit. He proposed legislation to enact a 90-day residency requirement for recipients of public assistance and a bill to repeal the Utility Tax. Assemblyman Hawley has worked tirelessly for the rights and well-being of Western New Yorkers.
Assemblyman Hawley is committed to veterans and their families. He currently serves as the Ranking Minority Member of the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee and has sponsored meaningful legislation that will aid veterans and current service personnel. His commitment is further evidenced by the various local veterans events he attends and by hosting an annual Patriot Trip for veterans to Washington D.C.
Assemblyman Hawley currently serves on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Insurance, and Racing and Wagering Committees. He also serves on several Minority Task Forces, including Economic Development, Education and Infrastructure; Tax, Mandate Relief and Government Reform; and Public Safety. He serves as Minority Whip of the Minority Conference. Steve maintains a district office in Albion, NY and regularly holds Town Hall Meetings throughout the 139th District.
