As a freshman legislator in Albany, he joined with several other legislators in developing the legislation that ultimately resulted in the STAR Tax Exemption Program.
He is the Ranking Minority on the Assembly Economic Development, Job Creation, Commerce and Industry Committee and serves on the Assembly Agriculture, Higher Education and Insurance Committees. In 1986, he joined Utica National Insurance, New Hartford, NY as a Corporate Communications Specialist. Upon his election to the Assembly, he resigned from that position in order to serve as a full-time state legislator.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from SUNY Potsdam.
A lifelong resident of the Mohawk Valley, he currently resides in the Village of Newport with his wife Susan. They have two children, Caitlin and Jeffrey.
