+ − Biography
Joseph Borelli has represented the constituents of the 62nd Assembly District since November 6, 2012. His district includes the South Shore of Staten Island.
Borelli brings years of expertise in both New York City and state government to the Assembly. He served as Chief of Staff to Councilman Vincent Ignizio from 2005 to 2012, and also served as the Councilmans Budget Director, Communications Director and Legislative Director.
Dedicated to the improvement of the quality of life on Staten Island, Borelli has coordinated the development of several Park and Rides on the Island, and led negotiations with the Port Authority to retain the carpool discount on its bridges. He has been a leader in securing funds to outfit nearly every classroom on the South Shore with a Smartboard and has worked with the Parks Department on the renovation and construction of several parks on Staten Island.
Active in his community, Borelli has been involved in the Staten Island Growth Management Task Force, the West Shore Light Rail Task Force, the Brookfield Landfill Citizens Advisory Committee, and recently helped spearhead the formation of the South Shore Local Development Corporation. He was instrumental in the successful fight to eradicate PCBs from public school buildings, and has been a leader in the movement to reduce taxes, tolls, and fees in New York City.
As a volunteer, Borelli serves on the Development Board of St. Joseph by the Sea High School, as well as the Friends of the College of Staten Island, which raises money for scholarships. He has guided dozens of non-profits, veterans organizations and community groups in accessing government grants. He has helped raise private money for equipment to help handicapped children at Mount Loretto, and has worked with the Verdino Foundation to bring a state-of-the-art little league facility to the South Shore.
Borelli is a native Staten Islander who has lived in Huguenot for 30 years. He holds a B.A. from Marist College and an M.A. from the College of Staten Island, where he is also an Adjunct Professor of Political Science.
