Jeffrey Dinowitz was elected to the New York State Assembly to represent the 81st Assembly District on February 15, 1994. He led a team of reformers that swept into party* office in 1986, and built a strong and vibrant party* in the 81st A.D. The district includes Riverdale, Kingsbridge, Van Cortlandt Village, Norwood, Woodlawn and Wakefield.
Assemblyman Dinowitz chairs the Assembly Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection and serves on several other committees including; Judiciary, Health, and Election Law. From 2007 to 2011 Assemblyman Dinowitz chaired the Committee on Aging. He has served as Chair of the Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Chair of the Legislative Commission on Government Administration, the Subcommittee on Housing for the Elderly and the Subcommittee on Protecting the Elderly Consumer. In Albany he has focused on legislation dealing with senior issues, education reform, housing, and the environment. He is a leading supporter of increased education aid for New York City.
Jeffrey Dinowitz believes elected officials should pay particular attention to neighborhood issues and individual constituent problems. His district office has helped thousands of people to cut through government red tape in dealing with city, state and federal agencies. He was a longtime leader in the fight to prevent construction of a water filtration plant in the Jerome Park Reservoir or Van Cortlandt Park. He was a leading force behind the creation of a Business Improvement District for the West 231st Street and Broadway shopping district and is leading the charge to bring economic development to West 230th Street and Broadway. He was also a major force in the creation of two new middle/high schools in Riverdale and Kingsbridge.
Assemblyman Dinowitz has served in a myriad of community organizations. He was Vice President of the Riverdale Community Council and was a member of Bronx Area Policy Board #7 for seven years. He was an officer of New York Teachers Housing Corp. Mr. Dinowitz was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bronx High School of Science Foundation for ten years and was on the Board of Directors of the Bronx Council for Environmental Quality. He is a member of Riverdale Senior Services, the Riverdale Mental Health Association, the Riverdale YM-YWHA, and the Bronx County Historical Society. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Riverdale Temple and is on the Executive Committee of the Riverdale-Hudson Chapter of B'nai B'rith. In addition he has been a member of District Council 37 and the Public Employees Federation.
Jeffrey Dinowitz has represented his community in a number of political capacities. He was elected as a State Committeeman* in 1978 and served as a Delegate to his partys* National Conventions* of 1980, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008. He served as a party District Leader* from 1986 to 1994. In 2008 he was elected chair of his partys County Committee.*
Born in 1954, Jeffrey Dinowitz has lived in the Bronx all of his life. He is a graduate of Brooklyn Law School, City University, the Bronx High School of Science and Bronx public schools. He has been married to Sylvia Gottlieb since 1978. They have two children: Kara, 28 and Eric, 25. Prior to his election to the Assembly, Mr. Dinowitz served for ten years as an Administrative Law Judge for the State of New York.
