Assemblyman Edward C. Braunstein is a lifelong Bayside resident and was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2010 to represent the 26th District in Northeast Queens, which includes the neighborhoods of Auburndale, Bay Terrace, Bayside, Bayside Hills, Broadway-Flushing, Douglaston, Floral Park, Glen Oaks, Little Neck, New Hyde Park, North Shore Towers, Oakland Gardens and Whitestone.
Assemblyman Braunstein is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Trust and Estates and is a member of the committees on Aging, Cities, Insurance, Judiciary, Small Business and Transportation.
Protecting seniors is a top priority for Assemblyman Braunstein. He is advocating for the elderly by working to prevent the closure of senior centers in New York City, reduce prescription drug costs, and preserve programs such as Meals on Wheels.
Assemblyman Braunstein has introduced numerous bills, including legislation to cap the increase on market values for co-ops and condos; prevent sex offenders from residing within 1,000 feet of a school; fight elder abuse; provide tax and rent relief to seniors; provide tax credits for small businesses that hire senior citizens; prohibit price gouging during emergencies; and require campuses to notify local law enforcement of on-campus violent crimes and missing persons. Assemblyman Braunstein�s first bill was signed into law in July 2011 and banned so-called “bath salts” (Chapter 130 of 2011).
Assemblyman Braunstein’s legislation protecting New Yorkers from fraudulent attorneys by making the unlicensed practice of a law a felony was signed into law in December 2012 (Chapter 492 of 2012).
Assemblyman Braunstein previously served on Community Board 11, where he fought to preserve the character of Northeast Queens neighborhoods. As a member of the Community Board 11 Parks Committee, Assemblyman Braunstein fought to keep local parks open and streets clean.
As a member of the Community Board 11 Education Committee, Assemblyman Braunstein championed the importance of a quality education for Northeast Queens students. In the Assembly, he is fighting to secure funding for local schools and to alleviate overcrowding in classrooms.
Assemblyman Braunstein attended the University at Albany, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Finance. After graduating college, Assemblyman Braunstein worked for the New York State Assembly as a Legislative Assistant in Speaker Sheldon Silver’s New York City office. During his time in Speaker Silver’s office, Assemblyman Braunstein attended evening classes at New York Law School. He passed the bar exam in February 2009 and is currently licensed to practice law in New York State.
