Honorable Peoples-Stokes has always set out to touch the lives of others, especially as a former Educator, Community Based Organizer, and Administrator. As a NYS Assemblywoman who represents the 141st District, she serves as the Chair of the Task Force on Food, Farm and Nutrition; and former Chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight of MWBEs. Heavily committed to improving the quality of life of her constituents she is a member of the Health; Insurance; Environmental Conservation; Government Operations; Substance Abuse; and Higher Education Committees. Assemblymember Peoples-Stokes also serves on the NYS Womens Legislative Caucus and Black, Puerto Rican, & Asian Legislative Caucus, as well as being a vital supporter to several local organizations. Most recently, Mrs. Peoples-Stokes was appointed to Governor Cuomos MWBE Executive Taskforce and served on Governor Pattersons Commission on Higher Education.
Her desire to enhance the lives of all around her has aided not only her districts constituency, but the Western New York region, by securing much needed funding for the Educational Opportunity Center ($28M) ; Historic Michigan Street Preservation District ($2M); the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Corridor; in addition to the environmental cleanup of 858 E. Ferry; Buffalo Public Schools ($50M+), adding a nurse in every school ($64M); and securing millions for MWBEs by giving them access to county contracts; just to name a few. In the 2009 session, she succeeded in authoring a bill that creates a NYS Emerging Managers and MWBE financial services strategy, to allow for the diversification and expansion of MWBE contracting goals to the retirement, social security, education and insurance law, which was signed into law.
An advocate with clear, principled service, Peoples-Stokes vows to continue the fight to ensure a better life for all. As a consensus builder and member of the WNY Delegation, she secured $100M appropriation for the Gates Vascular Institute, $1.5 Million for upgrades and renovation of Olmstead MLK Park and other projects within her district and across Western New York. The necessity for quality primary health care has driven her agenda, in which she fought for HEAL-NY for the Community Health Center of Buffalo, and a new dental clinic at Sheehan Health Network. She also played an integral role in securing another HEAL-NY grant that will be used to support UB/ ECMC launch of its Institute for Healthcare Informatics.
Assemblywoman Peoples-Stokes and her staff have an open door, open issue policy in her Buffalo District Office. The office is known for its attention to constituent issues. Assemblywoman Peoples-Stokes has received numerous honors and awards, too many to name.
As a graduate of Buffalo Public Schools, and Buffalo State College, she earned a Masters Degree in Student Personnel Administration and a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education.
