Rep. Messenger was born in Scott City, Kansas and eventually moved to Springfield, Missouri. He was raised on a small farm and his responsibilities included taking care of livestock and agricultural work.
Rep. Messenger joined the Navy in 1969 after graduating for the prestigious Naval Aviation Electronics School. After his graduation, he was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas. Rep. Messenger served for the squadrons at Corpus Christi, Beeville and Kingsville, Texas. His duties included maintaining and supporting the electronics equipment on the Training Aircraft. After serving four years in the Navy, Rep. Messenger received an honorable discharge in 1973.
Rep. Messenger has been a self-employed business owner since the early 1980s. He owned a water well drilling company for over 22 years. This company served most of Southwest Missouri in the residential and commercial markets. During his time as a business owner, Rep. Messenger also served as Secretary of the Missouri Water Well Association. He was instrumental in developing the guidelines and regulations regarding the “methods of drilling” in Missouri.
After selling his water well drilling company, Rep. Messenger and his wife purchased a prosthetics and orthotics company called Kessler Heasley Artificial Limb Co. The company was located in Ozark, Missouri, but a few years later it was moved to Springfield, Missouri. During this time Rep. Messenger also opened another branch of the Kessler Heasley Artificial Limb Company in Monett, Missouri; with a new location opening soon in Joplin, Missouri.
Rep. Messenger has been married to his wife, Wanda, since 1969. His sons, Eric and Jeffery, work alongside them in their prosthetics and orthotics business.
