First elected to the Michigan Senate in 2010, Senator Jim Marleau represents the majority of northern Oakland County’s residents. Prior to his election to the Senate, Marleau served as a leading conservative in the Michigan House of Representatives and as Orion Townships “frugal” Township Treasurer. Marleau retired from a career in business and as a small business owner prior to serving in public office.
As a state legislator, Marleau has worked diligently to reduce government spending, remove burdensome impediments to job providers, and create a more transparent state government.
Marleau serves as a member of the Health Policy, Regulatory Reform, and Transportation committees, and the Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Appropriations subcommittees. Previous appointments include co-chair of the House Republican Campaign Committee (a post that was shared by the previous two Republican speakers of the House), chair of the Joint Committee of Administrative Rules, vice chair of the House Committee on Employment Relations, and Republican chair of the House Committee on Regulatory Reform.
Marleau has been a businessperson in Michigan for almost 35 years, small business owner for thirteen years, a manufacturer’s representative for twenty years and retail manager for eight years. His experience as a full-time Orion Township treasurer for two terms (totaling eight years), and as a member of the Orion Township Planning Commission for six years has contributed greatly to his leadership abilities in attracting job providers.
As an Oakland County resident for more than 30 years, Marleau has been actively involved in many community organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, Paint Creek Trail & Polly Ann Trail ways, and Habitat for Humanity. He is a founding board member of the North Oakland Transportation Authority (NOTA), which provides transportation for local residents in need. Recently, Marleau augmented his long-time advocacy for autism awareness by serving as a board member of Michigan-based Homes for Autism.
Marleau received his degree in business and finance from the University of Toledo and is a certified municipal financial administrator (CMFA) through Central Michigan University. Jim and Thea Marleau have been married for over 35 years and reside in Lake Orion where they raised their children, Jim Jr. and Christina, who both graduated from Orion schools and Michigan Universities.
