Senator Bruce Caswell was elected to the Michigan Senate in 2010, representing Branch, Hillsdale, Lenawee and St. Joseph counties.
Caswell is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, where he will chair the Department of Human Services subcommittee and serve as vice chair of the subcommittees for the Department of Community Health (DCH); K-12, School Aid and Education; and Retirement.
He previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2003 to 2008, chairing the Community Colleges Appropriations subcommittee during his first term. In his second term, he served as the chair of the DCH Appropriations subcommittee. He later served as the minority vice chair for the DCH and School Aid Appropriations subcommittees in his final House term. While in the House in 2004, he attended the Council of State Governments Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development.
Caswell is a retired school teacher and school superintendent. He taught history, mathematics, and physics over his 28 years of service as a teacher. His first teaching position was at North Adams Area Schools, the district where he went to school as a student. He later taught at Onsted Community Schools. In 1979, he began his teaching career at Pittsford Area Schools.
Caswell also served as the superintendent of Pittsford Area Schools from 1997 to 2000, retiring from education in 2000. As a high school assistant football coach and head track coach, he helped lead Pittsford’s football team to a state championship in 1996 and led the track team in winning four consecutive state championships. Because of his success as a coach, the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame inducted Caswell as a member in 2000.
Caswell served as the township supervisor for Adams Township in Hillsdale County for 20 years. He has also served as a tax assessor in Hillsdale County for 22 years. A member of the Hillsdale County Republican Party, Caswell served in the post of party treasurer and chairman. The Hillsdale County Republicans named him their “Republican of the Year” for 2007.
Bruce Caswell graduated from North Adams High School. After graduation Caswell attended West Point Academy for two years. A true Spartan, he received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Michigan State University in 1971. He returned to his alma mater to earn a master’s degree in history in 1976 with an education minor in physics several years later.
The son of Donald and Eleanor Caswell, Bruce was born on October 20, 1949. Bruce and his wife, Beth, have been married for 37 years. Beth currently serves as the Adams Township Clerk. They have two children, Mark and Kevin, and two grandchildren, Samuel and Katherine.
Caswell is a member of the Pittsford Lions Club, Wheatland Congregational Church, Hillsdale Masonic Lodge #32, Hillsdale American Legion and Mosherville Grange. He is also a life member of the MSU Alumni Association and the National Rifle Association.
