Dian Slavens is serving her third term as State Representative for the 21st House District, which includes the city of Belleville and Canton and Van Buren townships.
Before joining the House in 2009, Dian worked as a respiratory therapist for more than 20 years in Southeast Michigan hospitals - first at William Beaumont Hospital and later at Henry Ford Hospital. Her experience gave her a firsthand look at how families are hurt when they don’t have access to affordable health care.
As State Representative, Dian is working to protect the health and well-being of all Michigan residents. She sponsored a law to hold health care professionals accountable when they engage in harmful and unethical medical practices and was instrumental in passing the statewide ban on smoking in most indoor places in Michigan, including bars and restaurants.
Dian also is fighting for aggressive job creation strategies that take advantage of Michigan’s manufacturing expertise and highly skilled workforce to help make the state a leader in advanced battery technology. She sponsored a law that expanded Michigan’s first-in-the-nation incentives for companies that make advanced batteries, like those found in hybrid and electric vehicles. These incentives have already attracted 17 cutting-edge companies that plan to invest nearly $6 billion and generate more than 63,000 jobs in Michigan.
In addition, Dian has been working to create a leaner, more efficient state government that uses every taxpayer dollar wisely. She voted to cut lawmakers’ salaries - including her own - by 10 percent. Dian also championed a plan to end taxpayer-funded lifetime health care for lawmakers and voluntarily gave up the expensive perk for herself.
Committed to supporting Michigan’s small businesses, Dian launched BuyMichFirst.com, a free website for businesses and consumers that promotes first-class Michigan-made products and services and the quality businesses behind them.
Dian is a long-time active community member, volunteering at Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, as a Sunday School teacher at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Canton Township and as a Girl Scout leader for the Huron Valley Council.
She has lived in Canton for more than 20 years and holds an associate degree in applied science and certification as a respiratory therapist from Oakland Community College.
Dian and her husband Mark Slavens, a Wayne County Circuit Court Judge, have three children, Damey, Patrick and Molly, and one grandson, Evan.
As a mother and a grandmother, Dian is dedicated to making sure that our schools have the resources to provide our children with the top-notch education they need to be successful in life and in the workplace.
