+ − Biography
State Representative Charles Brunner is serving his third term representing the 96th House District, which includes the cities of Bay City and Essexville and Bangor, Frankenlust, Hampton, Kawkawlin, Merritt, Monitor and Portsmouth townships in Bay County.
He has been active in improving our community for years, starting with helping to establish the Northwest Citizens District Council in the mid-1980s. He was Bay City Commissioner from 2001 to 2007, serving as president for part of that time. He became mayor of Bay City in 2007 and served until being elected to the House.
Dedicated to revitalizing Bay County’s strong manufacturing tradition, Brunner is a founding member of the Mayors Automotive Coalition, a national organization seeking to redevelop closed or closing automotive facilities. He started the General Motors Powertrain Support Group, and his efforts have helped keep Bay City’s Powertrain plant active and employing local residents.
Brunner was a high school business teacher for 30 years, and he understands firsthand how important it is for every child to receive a world-class education. He’ll fight to make sure our schools have the resources they need to prepare our children to compete in the global economy.
He has an associate’s degree in business administration from Delta College and three degrees from Central Michigan University: a bachelor’s in business/marketing education, a master’s in business education and a master’s in secondary school administration.
Brunner also started the annual citywide Clean-up Program, Adopt-a-Park Program and Mayor’s Housing Initiative. He is a member of the Bay County Historical Society, board member of Friends of Bay City State Park and a founding member of Bay Future.
Brunner and his wife, Judy, are lifelong residents of Bay County.
