+ − Biography
Senator Joan Lovely is in her second term as state Senator for the Second Essex District, comprised of Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield. Senator Lovely has been serving in the Massachusetts Senate since January 2013.
In her first term, Senator Lovely served as the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse, the Senate Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs, and served on five additional joint committees. Also, Senator Lovely was appointed to the Senate Special Committee to Study the Application of Section 35 and Drug Addiction Treatment Options and the Massachusetts Special Legislative Commission on Postpartum Depression.
Prior to joining the Legislature, Senator Lovely served on the Salem City Council for over 15 years. She served as President of the City Council in 2001 and in 2012. Senator Lovely immersed herself in the Council’s work while serving as chairwoman of the Committee on Administration and Finance, the Committee on Ordinances, Licenses, and Legal Affairs, and the Committee on Community and Economic Development. Senator Lovely also acted as the Council’s liaison to the Board of Directors for the Salem Council on Aging and to the city’s Commission on Disabilities. Her years of experience on the ground level of government have given the Senator a deep appreciation for the complexity and significance of government on the state level.
In addition to her career in public service, Senator Lovely is particularly proud to have volunteered for many years as a literacy buddy for children between grades one and four in the Salem public schools.
