+ − Biography
Maile Shimabukuro has served as the State Senator for District 21 (Kalaeloa, Honokai Hale, Ko Olina, Nanakuli, Maili, Wai‘anae, Makaha, Makua), since December 2010. Prior to that, she was the State House Representative for District 45 (Wai‘anae, Makaha, Makua) from 2003-2010. She is a member of the Hawaiian and Women's Caucuses.
Maile graduated from the University of Hawai‘i William S. Richardson School of Law, Colorado College, and ‘Iolani School. She holds a B.A. in English, and a J.D.
Maile is an attorney at the Legal Aid Society of HI, and represents clients in family, public benefits, housing, and consumer matters. She has also worked as a law clerk in State District Court; legal assistant to Alan B. Burdick, Esq.; research assistant to Professor Eric Yamamoto; and reporter for The Leeward Coaster.
Maile, who is half Okinawan and half Chinese, grew up in Wai‘anae. Her significant other is Shayne Sakoda. She has a son, Keani, and stepchildren Amber, Kekai, Christopher, Emma, Jaedyn, and Tyce. Maile is the proud daughter of Karen Young, formerly a nurse practitioner at Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC), and James Shimabukuro, a professor at Kapi‘olani Community College. Her sister, Summer Miles, is an instructor at Leeward Community College - Wai‘anae, and her stepfather, Dr. Fred Dodge, served as medical director and a family physician at WCCHC. Maile's interests include surfing, the outdoors, politics, and travel.
