The Honorable Yvette M. Alexander has been a member of the Council of the District of Columbia since 2007. Councilmember Alexander chaired the Committee on Aging and Community Affairs from 2009 through 2010. She chaired the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs from 2011 through 2012. Presently, she serves as Chair of the Committee on Health and is responsible for oversight of Department of Health, Department of Health Care Finance, Department of Behavioral Health, Health Professions and Boards and Licensing.
Councilmember Alexander is also a member of three other committees: Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs; Education; and Workforce and Community Affairs.
At the early age of 14, Councilmember Alexander began her community service in Ward 7, where she mentored under the late Lorraine H. Whitlock. In 1998, she was elected as the Ward 7 Female Representative on the D.C. Democratic State Committee (DCDSC), where she served two terms. On the DCDSC, she served as Chair of the Voter Education and Affirmative Action Committee and served two terms as Corresponding Secretary.
Councilmember Alexander began her professional career in management with United Airlines. She spent much of her career in the health insurance industry. Employed in 1993 by Chartered Health Plan, she served as a marketing professional advocating for access to improved health care services for Medicaid recipients. Continuing with her career in health care, Councilmember was hired as a Consultant with American Preferred Provider Plan’s Early and Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT) for infants through 18 year olds. Later, Councilmember began working with the D. C. Department of Insurance, Securities, and Banking, where she spent nearly five years as an Insurance Regulator. As a legislator she has introduced several measures primarily impacting her district with improvements in the areas of economic development, health, education, public safety, social services and environmental and regulatory issues.
Among her various accomplishments, Councilmember Alexander has served as a Shop Steward with the AFSCME Council 20 Local 2743; volunteered with Mentors Incorporated, which focuses their efforts on DCPS high school students; was recognized by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and the Louisiana Insurance Department for her efforts in New Orleans, LA assisting residents who were affected by the Hurricane Katrina disaster and honored by the Prairie View University Criminal Justice Department’s Youth Outreach Program for her service and commitment.
Councilmember Alexander received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Howard University and studied graduate work at Trinity College. She serves as a board member for The Washington Tennis and Education Foundation and the Take Charge Program, a juvenile diversion and gang prevention program. She is a native of Washington, D.C. and proudly serves the residents of Ward 7.
