Representative Victor Gaston was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1982 and elected Speaker Pro Tempore on December 8, 2010.
As a member of the Alabama House, Gaston serves on the Rules, Ways and Means General Fund, Transportation, Utilities and Infrastructure, and Mobile County Legislative Committees. He also chairs two committees, the House Legislative Council, the Permanent Oil and Gas Study Committee and is the Vice Chair Joint Legislative Council. Representative Gaston is a former member of the United States Energy Council.
He received his B.S. degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, M.A. from the University of South Alabama, and Ed.D from Auburn University. He is a member of Phi Delta Kappa.
Representative Gaston was an elected delegate to six consecutive Republican National Conventions. He served on the convention’s Rules Committee in 1988 and Credentials Committee in 2000. He also served two terms on the National Republican Legislators Board.
He serves as a member of the Board of Volunteers of America, Penelope House, Home of Grace for Women, 4-H Club Foundation, AltaPointe (Mobile Mental Health Center), SO-MI Club, Advisory Council for the Assistance League of Mobile, and the Mobile Association for Retarded Children. Representative Gaston is former member of the board of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce.
Representative Gaston is a former member of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. He was appointed to this commission by President Ronald Reagan and President George H.W. Bush.
Representative Gaston is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including: Alabama Republican Party Legislative Honors, Humanitarian of the Year for service to those with physical and mental disabilities, the award for Outstanding Service and Contributions from Mobile Deaf Community, Alabama Library Association award for Exceptional Service, Conservation of Alabama Soil and Water Advisory Committee Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mobile County Republican Executive Committee, the Distinguished Service Award from the University of South Alabama, YMCA's Youth Advocacy Award, the Electric Cities of Alabama 2013 Legislative Award, Alabama Association of Regional Councils' Outstanding Elected Official Award, and the Israel Leadership Award 2016.
He and his wife, Jean, are the parents of two sons, Hank and George. They have been blessed with six grandsons; Jason, James, Cameron, Matthew, Noah, and Charlie.
Representative Gaston is an ordained deacon and a member of the sanctuary choir at Spring Hill Baptist Church.
